At the beginning of 2012 Benin City joined AD on a new journey. After 18 months in the studio, Benin City‘s debut album Fires In The Park is finished and set for release on the 1st July 2013.
Named after a Nigerian state capital, Benin City is Theo Buckingham on Drums, Tom Leaper on Tenor Sax, and Joshua Idehen on Rhymes. Joshua met Theo Buckingham at a squat party. They struck up a loud friendship and decided to make more organised noises together. Voila.
Within their relatively short career as a band, they have supported acts such as Fool’s Gold, Tinashe, Yungun, Sound of Rum and Kid British. They’ve been played on BBC 3‘s The Verb and Huey Morgan’s BBC6 show. Their vibrant and energetic performances have garnered them a loyal following, including John Kennedy (XFM), Huey Morgan (Fun Loving Criminals, BBC6), Mark Lamarr, Scroobius, Ed Sheeran and Craig Charles.
A passionate and refreshing new band, Benin City’s upcoming album Fires in the Park is due to be released next month with a diverse range of music which is set to be a live favourite. Expect to see and hear a lot more of Benin City in 2013!
